Books -> Movies

Over the last few years, there have been A LOT of books turned into movies or TV shows.  A few months ago, my boss had me do some research on those titles so we could start stocking the books in the store.  Let me tell you, it’s a ridiculous amount.

Now, I usually try to read the books first in these instances.  There’s always just so much more you get out of books.  That doesn’t always work out though.  I remember I watched the first episode of Big Little Lies before I picked up the book.  With TV shows especially, I think it’s always kind of nice to get a feel for the tone of the story on screen first. I watched most of the seasons of Game of Thrones before I ever picked up a book.  I even was way late to the Harry Potter scene and watched the first 4 movies (those were the only ones finished at the time) before reading the 2 that were available and was caught up in time for Deathly Hallows to be released.

In my research for work I found a book called You by Caroline Kepnes.  We had a used copy at work but never thought to give it a try.  I saw it was going to be as how on Netflix.  The hubby was napping one day when he got home from work (he worked at 2am) and I had just finished another re-watch of Friends and needed something to watch.  I found You on Netflix and decided to give it a shot.  It has Penn Badgley from Gossip Girl and Shay Mitchell from Pretty Little Liars (2 of my guilty pleasure shows).  This is seriously the most screwed up story I have ever watched.  It’s basically about a guy who works at a bookstore and he starts stalking this pretty girl who comes in.

I don’t just mean follow around, I mean he follows her everywhere and arranges “chance” meet-ups.  He watches her have sex with her boyfriend through her windows (to be fair, she’s in a ground floor apartment in New York with NO CURTAINS.  He shouldn’t be watching but come on people…).  I’m on episode 5 of 10 and it’s so dark and messed up.  I’m not sure if I’ll read the book or not but the show has been fantastic.

Have you ever watched something and it made you read the book?

Do you prefer the books over the movies/TV shows?
